Paintings by Susan Buttner continue to have a broad appeal and are held in corporate and private collections in Ireland and abroad.
The first brush stroke by the artist is the curve of the road, this instinctive approach to strong composition makes Susan's work unique and instantly recognisable.
Focusing on the abstract form on the canvass, the artist depicts cottages, out buildings and fields all glimpsed in passing “through the tress”. Details fade into the background as the form and bold block colours take shape, the combination is both striking and appealing to the eye.
The artist has a genuine connection with all things organic, as a regular visitor to the Phoenix Park, she loves to paint outdoors, her fascination with the Guinness family “workers cottages” is self evident and they figure prominently in her work. The gate houses, the polo and cricket grounds, all particular favourites.
Series 1 captures the “workers cottages”, scattered around the Phoenix Park, at Lucan Weir, Strawberry Beds, Anglers Rest, Castleknock College, Knockmaroon Hill, Blackhorse Avenue and Stoney Batter. Using impasto to give the trees their rich blend of colours and texture, conjuring up wonderful images of winding roads, swinging up around the workers cottages, glimpsed in passing ..."through the trees".
