James O'Halloran renders forms by means of light using thick, layered brushstrokes and thin, luminous glazes. There is a lucidity about his work which renders the images 'retina-friendly'; the essentials are clearly highlighted for ease of interpretation. Whether he is dealing with a descriptive or a narrative passage the artists's intentions are clear. There is no straining for effect, no flamboyance, no curlicues; his powerful
understatement results in a quiet simplicity. One is reminded of the writing of John McGahern
who, like James, was intent on "casting light into ordinary, everyday corners".
